Description
An exquisite freestanding figured maple wood and ebony desk of Neo-Classical form In The manner of Josef Danhauser, Origin : Austrian, Vienna. Circa 1820, Biedermeier Period. Provenance : Private European Collection, Originally purchased from Michael Lipitich Antiques London. Extremely stylish and evoking the characteristics of the famous Austrian cabinet maker of the early 19th century Josef Ulrich Danhauser, a father and son firm dating 1804-1838, although due to the rarity of this desk, with research we have not been able to find a similar design therefore not being able to link a firm connection with Danhauser. This exquisite desk of freestanding form, inlaid with ebonised stringing, has a rectangular top with a wonderfully patinated tan leather insert, the inset writing slide above a long central drawer and flanked by bulbous and waisted pedestals each containing three drawers raised on a plinth base. The second drawer down acts as a locking system to open the sprung loaded hidden bulbous drawer, once this drawer is completely removed there are two secret drawers hidden to the back of the pedestals. With its timeless and exemplary design, refined quality and attention to detail this is an exceptional example of early 19th century Viennese work. Likely to be that of a leading innovative designer / cabinetmaker akin to Danhauser. During the early 19th Century some of the Biedermeier designs stemming from Vienna, as the desk we have for sale here, can be construed as modernist even to this day and this radical innovation in design so typical of Vienna in the early 19th Century sets these pieces apart. The Biedermeier period refers to an era in Central Europe, mainly Austria and Southern Germany, during which the middle-class prosperity exploded and arts appealed to common sensibilities in the historical period between 1815, the year of the Congress of Vienna at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and 1848, the year of the European revolutions. Although the term itself is a historical reference, it is predominantly used to denote the artistic styles that flourished in the fields of literature, music, the visual and decorative arts, such as furniture. Knee Height 23 inches - 58.5cm
