Description |
A magnificent 17Th / 18Th Century and later English Japanned Lacquer Cabinet on Gilt carved Stand.
This extremely rare cabinet would have been used in the late 17Th Century and early 18Th century as means to show off a wealthy noblemen's exotic finds from around the world, e.g stones, eggs, coins etc to his guests after dinner.
Obviously this cabinet would have originally been commissioned for an extremely affluent household as most would never have been able to afford such a item let alone have a collection to store within it.
The rectangular top still retaining the original Japanned decoration having two Japanned decorated doors below with ornate brass hinges and hardware which open to reveal and bank of drawers with central locking door which again open to reveal a selection of fine drawers for the most precious finds.
The cabinet is supported on a extremely decorative gilt carved wood stand with carved figures and foliate swags united by a central stretcher.
In excellent condition having had later restoration and been hand polished using traditional methods this is a fine addition to any household a sure to be the focal point of whatever room it resides.
