Description |
A fine and rare mid-19th century mahogany leather upholstered wing-backed armchair / Gainsborough chair circa 1850.
This extremely well-drawn chair has superb proportions with a good wide seat.
Retaining a beautiful old leather, the slightly domed back flanked by shaped wings which serpentine down to out-swept scrolling armrests, each having a mahogany rosette and foliate carved shaped façades. The seat retaining a well-sized feather cushion making this armchair very comfortable indeed.
Raised on ornately carved foliate cabriole front legs terminating on a ball and claw foot with a well-shaped splayed cabriole back leg.
I would say approximately 50 plus years ago this wing chair has been fully upholstered in a hand dyed soft leather hyde with a brass nail finish surround. The leather is in excellent condition with no rips or tears which has been fully nourished and waxed in our workshops.
A very rare chair to find for a couple of reasons, one being it has a Gainsborough feel to the chair having the carved front concave armrests with a good wide seat which is very rare to find and secondly finding an old leather is such good condition which is extremely rare.
A very handsome and comfortable armchair with a good choice of mahogany timber used. Also older than most seen on the market.
Seat height 18 1/2 inches – 47cm
