Quality Mahogany Shaped Pedestal Desk by S & H Jewel of Holborn #2716

A good quality early 20th Century shaped front pedestal desk by S & H Jewel of Holborn, London.

English, London made Circa 1900.

Constructed from fine quality mahogany, the rectangular shaped top having a thin cross-banded mahogany border, surrounding a blind tooled leather writing insert over a frieze containing two bowed drawers, flanking a concave central drawer above a knee hole. The bow-fronted pedestals each containing three graduated hand-cut dovetails, solid oak drawers with cockbeaded edge, brass swan neck handles and central brass locks, raised on ogee bracket feet. 

The sides of unusual form having a recessed moulded panels with the rear being veneered and polished so the desk can stand freely within the room if desired.

This desk is just that bit better than most on the market and typical of S & H Jewell.

Offered in excellent restored condition and ready for home use.

S & H Jewell were fine quality cabinet makers who were established in 1830. They were a family business who worked from their premises at 29-31 Little Queen Street, Holborn, in London and then later to Parker Street, LONDON. W.C.2. They are recorded to have sold furniture to the Arts and Crafts home, Standen House, East Grinstead, Sussex and stated on the receipt dated 1st May 1894, states the company was founded in 1830 but there are not many records of their earlier pieces. They also retailed furniture and resorted items from their London premises.
