Fine Late Regency Sofa After A Design by John Taylor #2588

A fine quality late Regency / William IV mahogany sofa newly upholstered in a high quality neutral coloured linen, after a design by John Taylor.

English Circa 1830.

The fine foliate and acanthus leaf carved double scrolled top rail with central shell cartouche above a softly upholstered oblong back within padded arms. Each arm having foliate carved vase shaped facings on plinth bases, enclosing a shallow buttoned cushion seat and twin bolsters sitting over a reeded rail. Raised on four turned and reeded tapering legs with panelled headers finishing on decorative brass castors retaining their original gilt work.

Offered in excellent condition a very stylish and much admired late Regency design, incorporating Greek and Roman elements, which can be found in R. Ackermann's, 'Repository of Arts' 1821, (P. Agius, Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, Marlborough, 1984, p. 132, pl. 116).

John Taylor was established in Edinburgh at about the time this sofa was made and followed the current trends which were most notably set by George Smith.
