French Empire Period Walnut Window Seat Banquette after Jacob
#2875
An unusual and well drawn early 19th Century French Empire walnut window seat / banquette after the celebrated Jacob family.
French circa 1810.
The padded over-scrolled ends with oblong toprails, carved with lozenge-enclosed patera within imbricated bird head-facings, above a newly upholstered silk cushioned seat and original bolstered over moulded rail on feather lappet-carved scrolling legs and bird like paw feet.
Inspired by Ancient Greek and Roman forms this rare and elegant daybed is very much in the manner of the celebrated cabinetmaking family firm Jacob whom worked in Paris from the late 18th century to the early 19th Century. The design follows the avian form which is not often seen in this type of window seat having the birds heads to the top rails and the feet even having a carved rear talon.
