George III Mahogany Serpentine Side Table in the Manner of Wright & Elwick #2688

A fine and elegant mid 18th Century Chippendale period mahogany serpentine side table with single drawer, retaining a wonderful colour and patination, possibly by Wright & Elwick.

English George III period, Circa 1760.

The well chosen, figured solid mahogany top, of serpentine form, over an unusually large shaped central drawer having later brass handles, above a crisply carved egg and dart moulded apron, also rarely seen are the sides and frieze being of serpentine design. The square cut moulded chamfered legs having a conforming egg and dart moulding to the edges, with foliate carved spandrels to each corner.

Very good rich colour with elegant proportions, offered in an excellent waxed condition.

Very possibly by the celebrated Yorkshire makers Wright and Elwick. The combination of generic Chippendale influenced design, the distinctive egg and dart moulded legs and foliate carved spandrels appear to be a signature of their known works. Along with the superior quality of timber and construction all point to Wright and Elwick being the makers of this fine table.

Richard Wright and Edward Elwick whose prolific partnership lasted from 1747 to 1771 where both subscribers to the first edition of chippendales Director of 1754. They had the honour to serve most of the Nobility & Gentry in the West and North Rideing.

Certainly, records indicate that they received patronage from such distinguished clients as Sir Rowland Winn at Nostell Priory, the Duke of Norfolk at Worksop Manor, Viscount Irwin at Temple Newsam House, John Spencer at Cannon Hall and most notably, the Marquess of Rockingham at Wentworth Woodhouse.
